How to enable Multi-Factor Authentication on your NordLocker account

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an extra security layer of security to your NordLocker account. This guide will explain how to enable MFA using authenticator applications or security keys.

Please note, that MFA will be enabled on your Nord Account. This means that you will be asked to authenticate yourself with an extra step whenever you try to log in to your Nord Account and access these Nord products: NordLocker, NordVPN, and NordPass. You will not be asked for the MFA code if you are already logged in to your Nord Account on the device.

How to set up MFA using an authenticator application

MFA is similar to two-factor authentication, except 2FA requires two steps to verify, like a password and a code from your phone or email. MFA allows you to add more than two steps, like a fingerprint or a security key, for even more protection.

To set it up using an authenticator application, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your Nord Account, click on your email on the top right, and head to account settings.

  5. This will generate your QR code and key. Open your mobile authentication app (Duo Mobile, Authy, etc.) and either scan the QR code or enter the key.

When your account is saved in the authenticator app, go back to the Nord Account website and select continue

Set up MFA prompt, continue is highlighted

  6. Enter the MFA code that was generated in your mobile authentication app.

    Prompt to complete the MFA

  7. Make sure to save your backup codes that can be used if you cannot access the authenticator app.

Prompt of MFA being successfully enabled

How to set up MFA using a security key

A security key is an even further layer of protection that requires a physical key, like a USB, that you need to plug into your device to unlock your account.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. Log into your Nord Account and choose account settings.

  2. Open the Multi-factor authentication (MFA) tab and select manage MFA
