What is MFA, and how to use it

Introduction

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security process that requires more than one method of authentication from independent categories of credentials to verify the user's identity. By enabling MFA on your Nord Account, you ensure that your NordLocker, NordVPN, and NordPass data remains protected even if your password is compromised.

In this article, you will learn how to enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to add an extra layer of security to your NordAccount.

Here's what to do

Set up MFA using an authenticator application

  1. Log in to your Nord Account, click on your email in the top right corner, and select the "Account settings" button.
  2. Open the "Multi-factor authentication (MFA)" tab and select the "Manage MFA" button.
  3. Enter the verification code sent to your email to verify your identity.
  4. Once redirected back to Account settings, select the "Set up" next to the "Authenticator app".
  5. A QR code and a secret key will be generated. Open your mobile authenticator app and either scan the QR code or manually enter the key.
  6. After the account is saved in your app, return to the Nord Account website and select "Continue".
  7. Enter the MFA code generated by your mobile app to complete the link.
  8. Save your backup codes in a secure location; you'll need them if you lose access to your authenticator app.

Set up MFA using a security key

  2. Open the "Multi-factor authentication (MFA)" tab and select the "Manage MFA" button.
  3. Enter the verification code sent to your email to verify your identity.
  4. Once redirected back to Account settings, select the "Set up" next to the "Security Key".
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to register your physical security key by inserting it into your device when requested.
  6. Once enabled, you will be required to use this physical key to access your Nord Account in the future.
